Olivier Ntcham’s comments on opposition don’t chime with his form in Scotland

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham has made it clear he wants to leave the Hoops to progress his career while speaking to French outlet L’Equipe.

What’s he said?

Ntcham so far hasn’t been part of Celtic’s pre-season preparations having taken part in the UEFA U21 Championships with France this summer.

Now the player doesn’t sound too keen on returning to Celtic Park to play next season, claiming to French press that he is better off elsewhere and that he was disappointed not to join Porto last summer.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

As quoted by L’Equipe, the 23-year-old said:

“Celtic has given me a lot, but it’s the best solution for my development. We can do as many matches as we want but, with all due respect for my opponents, if the level in front is not high, you do not progress.

“I was really disappointed not to have gone to Porto last summer.

“What could be the perfect stage for me? A big championship: Germany, France, Spain – coming back to France would be something very, very good.

“The interest of the Marseille? It is flattering. It is a very big club with very big support. If I went to Marseille, I would blossom, I have always signed for clubs with lots of fans.”

Has Ntcham outgrown Scottish football?

It’s fair to say his comments aren’t the most professional just days before the Hoops kick-off their UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign.

The lack of commitment and interest in Celtic should be alarming for many supporters.

Players have used Celtic as a stepping stone in the past of course. Virgil van Dijk, Moussa Dembele and Victor Wanyama have been given a platform to shine before heading elsewhere in big money moves, to the benefit of all parties.

The difference between that trio and Ntcham though is that they were all stand-outs in the Scottish top-flight before making their move.

Ntcham isn’t even a first pick at Celtic, never mind on a national basis, with Scott Brown, Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor all playing more matches than the Frenchman last term.

His form was so poor that BT Sport pundit and former Hoops striker Chris Sutton branded him as a “huge disappointment” in his Daily Record column last month.

Perhaps the young Frenchman should focus on excelling against his opposition instead of complaining about the standard.

Leicester’s pursuit of Kieran Tierney is sending out worrying message about Ben Chilwell

[ad_pod ]

According to The Scottish Sun, Leicester are admirers of Scottish left-back Kieran Tierney, but they will face competition from some of Europe’s top clubs if they try and sign the promising Celtic man.

What’s the word?

Tierney has been making huge waves in Scotland, quickly becoming one of the most promising full-backs in Britain. His performances for the Hoops have been hugely impressive and, therefore, it’s no surprise to see some top clubs throwing their names in the hat to sign him.

The Scottish Sun is claiming that Leicester and Arsenal are both admirers of the 21-year-old but they face competition from two Italian sides.

The report claims that the Scot is being lined up in a £20m swoop by Napoli whilst Inter Milan are another potential suitor.

However, Tierney is set to undergo a major double hernia operation at the end of the season which could be bad news for anyone wanting to sign him.

Resigned to seeing Chilwell leave?

Given Leicester already possess an excellent young left-back in Ben Chilwell, the Foxes’ interest in Tierney may seem somewhat questionable.

They won’t both fit into the same squad so it would be extremely likely that the 22-year-old would depart the King Power should Brendan Rodgers be plotting a reunion with Tierney.

Back in March, The Telegraph claimed that Manchester City were interested in Chilwell but would have to pay a world record fee for a full-back.

Should he leave then Tierney’s arrival would certainly soften the blow. But, the fact he doesn’t possess a high amount of experience at the top level and has problems with injury means he wouldn’t be the most ideal replacement.

As a result, letting Chilwell go could be disastrous. He’s become a real fan favourite at the club but, by holding an interest in Tierney, the Midlands side are clearly anticipating bids for one of their prized possessions.

Arguably, this is sending out the completely wrong message. It almost feels as though they’re resigned to losing one of their star men, rather than trying to hold onto him.

Since Claude Puel departed the air has felt far more positive at Leicester. Seeing Chilwell leave could change all that.

Liverpool: New deal shows Joel Matip is Virgil van Dijk’s perfect partner

The difference between Liverpool now and in the pre-Virgil van Dijk era is astonishing, to say the least.

The world’s most expensive defender has lived up to the massive transfer fee Liverpool shelled out for him in December of 2017, and although van Dijk has grabbed the headlines this season and has asserted himself as one of the best centre-backs in world football, little has been said about his defensive partner Joel Matip.

The Cameroonian international has quietly built up a good reputation for himself in recent months with Joe Gomez out of the sideline with injury. Matip was once seen as Liverpool’s defensive saviour when he joined the Reds from Schalke on a free in 2016, and although on his own the defender has not set the Premier League alight, partnered with van Dijk the duo have been one of the best centre-back pairings in Europe.

And with reports from Football Insider emerging that the defender is set to be offered a new deal for his improved performances this season, it is likely we will see Matip take the number one spot in the Liverpool team for being the man to play alongside van Dijk in the starting XI.

There’s no question that long-term Gomez will be the player to lead the Liverpool backline, but for now, Matip has won over Jurgen Klopp and the Reds fans as the man to partner alongside van Dijk, and a new deal will be a testament to that statement.

Liverpool fans, has Matip been van Dijk’s best partner this season? Let us know!

Carlos Corberan is Leeds United’s best chance at future success

Leeds United are in capable hands if Marcelo Bielsa understudy Carlos Corberan leads the club in years to come.

To take a spot in the school of one of the most influential managers in the modern era, at least by Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino’s reckoning, is no easy feat – but Corberan has managed it. And deservedly so.

Carlos Corberan may only be 35-years-old but a career at the top level of coaching has been a long time coming with 12 years of experience to his name, and if his recent success with the under-23s is anything to go by (via Leeds-Live) then he is going to be quite the leader.

A Valencia academy player who never made it past the third tier of Spanish football, the Spaniard admitted he always saw his future outside of the playing realm. “I finished my career pretty fast,” he told Yorkshire Evening Post, “and I was 23 when I started to feel like my future would be more in coaching than as a player.”

Corberan was blooded at Villareal in 2006 when Spanish football was undergoing a major transition thanks to the ‘tiki-taka’ master Pep Guardiola. Both the Spanish national team, who enjoyed serious success in the ensuing years, and Villareal adapted their models, to match that of the former Barcelona man. He admits that this cataclysmic shakeup shaped his educational experience and coaching style: “From this moment there was a link between Guardiola and the Spanish national team and the style of Villarreal was in the same direction. It gave me new ideas about how you can train teams and what the best methodology is to have one style of play. It’s something that goes inside of you. It changes your mind and changes your feelings towards football.”

Indeed, to experience a change first-hand and to study one posthumously is a completely different experience. You get a tangible feel for it; the subtle shifts and differences that are often overlooked by scribes and commentators; the feedback from players who are adapting their game; the ways a coach can successfully harness the new style and things you must avoid for the future.

Interestingly, it is widely considered that Guardiola’s football is an extension of Bielsa’s (Yorkshire Evening Post) – and Corberan is tapping straight into that well of knowledge as we speak.

If the Spaniard is the man to inherit the Leeds United job, then he is certainly qualified enough to do it – at least in theory, anyhow.

Leeds United fans, do you think Carlos Corberan is the man for the job? Let us know in the comments below…

Jordan Henderson might be an awful lot better than people think

Jordan Henderson is a criminally underrated player at times and his recent performances for England have shown that.

Jordan Henderson celebrated his 50th cap on Monday night when he came on as a substitute in England’s convincing 5-1 victory over Montenegro, and it has got us reflecting on what is surely one of the most underappreciated careers in modern times.

Yes, we can admit that he hardly contributes the most exciting role on the pitch, and fans are all too prepared to remind us of that fact – but when did simplicity become a cause for criticism?

Have we moved that far away from the basics of the beautiful game, the passing, the energy, the tackling and tenacity – the very core principals we were taught as fledgeling players ourselves – that we cannot appreciate the simple arts? We think not. At least we should not have.

Gareth Southgate certainly has not, that is for sure, and we are more inclined to believe him, the man who united England and gave them their best summer in 52 years, over Joe Bloggs from the pub, weekend pundit and purveyor of all things illogical.

The England manager commented on Henderson’s milestone (via Henry Winter’s Twitter page): “he’s such an important player for us, with his winning mentality, he makes other players play well, he’s a leader”

Indeed, it must be nice for Liverpool fans to finally see their man getting some much-deserved plaudits; that long overdue recognition for the role he has performed with such admirable consistency through the years that it is hard not to appreciate him and his unbridled commitment, and discipline, to surely one of football’s most tedious roles.

Now, we want to be careful when we make this comparison – as we are hyper-aware of the huge gulf in class between the two – but you see the likes of Kante being praised no end for the simple roles they perform for their teams – so why are England fans so utterly intent on bashing Henderson?

Are we allergic to praising our domestic rivals?

Liverpool fans, is there English player better than Jordan Henderson at what he does? Let us know in the comments below…
