Celtic need to unleash Patryk Klimala in the coming games

Very rarely do we end up questioning Celtic.

Over the last ten years, they have been dominant, winning nine SPFL titles in a row.

However, this season looks as though it could pan out differently. That’s because Rangers are currently 11 points clear at the top of the table. There are a host of problems within the Parkhead ranks, but how can they solve them?

On the chalkboard

It’s not often we ask where the goals have gone in this Celtic team but beyond Odsonne Edouard this season, there appears to be a concerning lack.

Of course, Mohamed Elyounoussi has found form and scored a hat-trick recently, but the performances of Albian Ajeti are becoming a colossal concern.

The £4.5m summer signing scored five goals in his opening six games for the Hoops, but his displays have dropped off at an alarming rate.

He has now failed to score in his last eight outings and against Hibernian last weekend he was isolated and afforded few goal-scoring chances.

With Neil Lennon’s job under pressure, he needs to find a remedy soon.

Klimala at the ready

It’s taken a long time for the Polish striker to be ready but there is now no better excuse than to give him regular match action for the first time in Glasgow.

Patryk Klimala looked sloppy and wasn’t really up to scratch with the British game when he joined in January but he’s shown some strong signs in 2020/21, so much so that he simply has to be considered over the out of form Ajeti.

Why? Because he’s bulked up in terms of his stature and has three goals from just two starts all season. Remarkably, Klimala has played only 13 minutes in the Europa League this season, but that’s the competition where Lennon has to utilise him first.

The Pole must use Thursday as an audition to put himself right at the forefront of the manager’s plans, because in his minimal game time this season, he has been impressive.

Speaking about Klimala at the beginning of the season, Lennon said: “Patryk worked hard again. There are aspects of his game he needs to improve on.”

He continued: “It can be difficult coming to a new environment but he’s made his point and he’s headstrong. He wants to be part of it and wants to bulldoze in and make a contribution, so we are happy with that.”

So, what better occasion to throw him into the starting XI than in Europe?

It surely can’t get any worse than Ajeti showed last Saturday. Celtic need change in attack.

Southampton can exploit key weakness by unleashing Jannik Vestergaard vs Sheffield United

Southampton travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United in the Premier League on Sunday, and the Saints can exploit a key weakness in the Blades’ team by starting Jannik Vestergaard.

The Danish defender scored his third goal of the season in the Saints’ 2-1 win against Brighton last time out, powering home a header from James Ward-Prowse’s excellent delivery.

Ralph Hasenuhuttl’s side have now scored seven goals from a set-piece situation in the Premier League so far this season, which ranks them as the joint-best alongside Chelsea in the league.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, have conceded five goals from set-pieces in their Premier League fixtures thus far, which is the joint-second worst of any side in the top-flight.

Therefore, this certainly seems an area where Southampton can take advantage on Sunday, especially if they can make the most of Vestergaard’s aerial threat.

The six-foot-six defender has averaged a superb 7.24 rating for his performances in the Premier League so far this season and is clearly appreciated by Hasenhuttl, with the Austrian manager full of praise for the 28-year-old earlier this season, saying:

“He is a role model for never giving up and for developing your game.

“I am very happy to see a performance like this at the moment. It shows more and more the qualities we need at the moment.

“He is very calm and has good decision making and is definitely getting better and better.”

Considering Sheffield United are still without a win in the top-flight this season and currently sit bottom of the Premier League, this represents a real opportunity for the Saints to continue their superb start to the 2020/21 campaign.

Therefore, it seems likely that the centre-back will start against Sheffield United this weekend, and considering the quality of Ward-Prowse’s delivery so far this season, it would not be a surprise to see the former Borussia Monchengladbach defender on the scoresheet once again on Sunday.

Aston Villa could be making one huge mistake if they sign Divock Origi

According to fresh reports, Aston Villa are facing stiff competition for one of their mooted summer transfer targets, but they should probably let him move elsewhere…

What’s the word?

As per Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur (via the Mirror), Super Lig outfit Fenerbahce have made the first move to sign Liverpool outcast Divock Origi this window.

They want to sign the 25-year-old on loan but it could involve an obligation to buy of around £14m.

He also claims that Villa are one of the Premier League sides keen on signing Origi, along with Fulham, Brighton and Newcastle United.

Steer clear

The Belgian is a bit of a cult hero over at Anfield following his 2019 Champions League exploits, but aside from that, he’s done very little to warrant this interest.

Last season, Origi featured in 34 matches, though only eight were starts. He bagged four goals in the league and averaged a disappointing 0.5 shots and 0.4 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

These are figures well below that of Wesley in terms of goals and even Mbwana Samatta, who fired off over double the number of shots as the Reds backup.

In the past, there has been high praise for Origi, ranging from former Wolfsburg sporting director Olaf Rebbe claiming he’s “dangerous” and “quick” to fellow compatriot and Premier League legend Vincent Kompany describing him as a “monster.”

However with four strikers now on the books following the arrival of Ollie Watkins, a swoop for Origi at £14m reeks of being a nightmare as he could well struggle to get into Dean Smith’s XI let alone Jurgen Klopp’s.

The 25-year-old is also on £45k-per-week in Merseyside, so it’s not a cheap move at all and it is one that Johan Lange must absolutely avoid unless he wants to walk the club into another striker disaster.

Será a última partida oficial do goleiro no Morumbi.

Luke Edwards provides fresh Newcastle takeover update

It’s June 1st and Newcastle United’s prospective £300m takeover is still yet to be complete. The Premier League’s return to action is on the horizon in just a few weeks as the tumultuous 2019/20 campaign appears to be able to finally conclude. However, it’s now fast approaching the two-month mark since news first broke that current Magpies chief Mike Ashley was to sell the club to a very wealthy Saudi-backed consortium fronted by PCP Partners’ Amanda Staveley.A couple of weeks ago, The Sun’s Neil Custis hinted that today could finally be the day that the deal gets announced, but that seems rather unlikely given latest information from the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, who tweeted the following answer in response to a fan…

He claims that the takeover is still with the Premier League, who have been conducting their owners and directors test for several weeks now. Edwards won’t put a timeframe on it happening – but does suggest that there shouldn’t be any worries over it being off completely.

It’s merely a long game of patience, and given that the new season isn’t going to start for a few months, it shouldn’t be rushed. There will be plenty of time for the new owners to do what they need in preparation for next term should they eventually be handed the green light.

Spurs fans react as Serge Aurier in line for new contract

According to Le 10 Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are planning to offer a contract extension to right-back Serge Aurier with his current deal due to expire in 2022.

And the news has torn supporters in north London going by their reaction on social media.

The 27-year-old is a divisive figure at Spurs, regularly taking flak from sections of the Hotspur faithful, but he’s still a regular presence in Jose Mourinho’s backline.

Aurier has played 33 times this season, scoring two goals as well as providing seven assists, via Transfermarkt.

The Portuguese chief is that confident in him that he allowed backup to the role, Kyle Walker-Peters, depart on loan during the January transfer window despite being relatively light on options.

Spurs can finally replace Trippier with Meunier addition

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho can kill two birds with one stone this summer by landing a huge improvement to the right side of his defence.

The north London outfit have conceded the most amount of goals of any top ten side in the Premier League this season, perhaps a surprise given the past reputation of the Portuguese boss – he was once criticised by Johan Cruyff for being a “negative” coach who only cares about the result rather than the performance.

Jan Vertonghen will be on his way out, Danny Rose could leave permanently, and there are now doubts over the future of Kyle Walker-Peters, too.

If the latter were to depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, then Mourinho will be left with Serge Aurier, a player that fans have regularly slammed for being a “liability” and a “donkey” at the best of times.

But the right-back conundrum at Spurs has been long a problem, even looking back to the early season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Although, it was the Argentine that may have allowed this to occur as he oversaw Kieran Trippier’s departure to Atletico Madrid, who have since gone on to knock out their Champions League conquerors Liverpool in this season’s tournament, all while Spurs are left with nothing to play for.

Last season Trippier averaged 2.5 tackles, 2.3 clearances, 2 crosses and 1.8 key passes, via WhoScored, all of which exceed the Ivory Coast international this term.

Well, they may well have a solution that’ll not only resolve the right-back position but in turn, will help steer the defence onto greater things.

According to Tuttosport, via Le10 Sport, Mourinho is keen on clinching Paris Saint-Germain full-back Thomas Meunier, who is set to be out of contract this summer.

Transfermarkt currently value him at £27m, and despite not featuring as much as he’d probably like to in the French capital, he’s put up some solid figures – averaging 1.85 tackles, 1.65 interceptions and 1.35 clearances each match in both the UCL and Ligue 1, per WhoScored.

Premier League Inflation: You won’t believe how much these famous transfers would cost today…

Meunier has also helped contribute with clean sheets against Real Madrid, Lyon and Lille this campaign.

Therefore, it would be wise for Mourinho to land the Belgian on a free at the end of the season, not only can Spurs finally fill the void left behind by Trippier, but it’ll give them a more defensively-sound right-back than Aurier.

Leeds fans not happy as Victor Orta targets another Middlesbrough player

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been critical of Victor Orta after the club were linked with a move for Middlesbrough centre-back Daniel Ayala.

The Whites fanbase have complained that the Spaniard is simply being lazy in going for another player from his former employers.

The trend of Leeds signing former Middlesbrough players has been rather noticeable since Orta joined the ranks at Elland Road as the Whites have brought in the likes of Adam Forshaw and Patrick Bamford in recent years.

A number of supporters were on board with the suggested signing of Ayala, but it seems that they’re sick of the lack of imagination being shown by the club in going for another Boro man.

Whether or not this deal actually gets done remains to be seen, but Leeds certainly have the links to make it happen.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on social media…
