Bangladesh fast bowler Shahadat Hossain has been ruled out* for six months after twisting his right knee during the lunch break on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan. Shahadat has suffered damage to the ligament and meniscus cartilage on the knee and will require surgery. He had been off the field for a large part of the first session after falling over in his follow through and hurting the same knee while bowling the first delivery of the match. He bowled another ball before limping off. He returned to the field in the 17th over and later took a catch at deep midwicket to dismiss Sami Aslam. He would have been allowed to bowl in the second session, but fell over while bowling some practice deliveries during the lunch break and had to be stretchered off. ESPNcricinfo has learned that the Bangladesh team management had asked Shahadat not to bowl during the interval.Mushfiqur Rahim used Soumya Sarkar to complete Shahadat’s opening over and Sarkar bowled 11.4 overs in the day. Bangladesh now have only one fast bowler and three spinners to try and take 20 Pakistan wickets. Shahadat was chosen for this match only because of an injury to Rubel Hossain, who was part of the XI for the Khulna Test. There is little chance of Shahadat batting in the Test.May 6, 2015 14:30 GMT: The piece has been updated with news of Shahadat Hossain being ruled out

Amla to the fore as SA do it their way

Hashim Amla played down his achievements after becoming the fastest man to 20 ODI hundreds in South Africa’s win over Ireland

Firdose Moonda in Canberra03-Mar-20152:31

‘Ticked a lot of boxes today’ – de Villiers

Chris Gayle “will probably score 300 in an ODI pretty soon”, according to Hashim Amla, who will content himself with the rest of the records even though he does not count himself among the game’s geniuses yet.”I’d love to score runs every game but I don’t think that’s possible … unless you are Don Bradman or AB de Villiers,” Amla joked. But his 20th century in his 111th ODI, which made him the fastest player to notch up that number of hundreds, defies all the deflective talk.Amla believes this success, and the many others, could have gone to anyone else and that keeps him humble. He was on 10 when he pulled a ball straight to short midwicket, and his innings could have ended. “When I hit that ball, I thought it was on the ground but I hit it well and that made it more difficult to catch,” Amla said.It also made it more difficult for Ireland to regroup and so presented South Africa with an opportunity to seize the advantage. “If you read the situation well and set up nicely for whenever you feel is the right time to take momentum, you will get 300 more often than not,” de Villiers, South Africa’s captain, said. When Amla was dropped, Ireland were in the driving seat. They had the early wicket of Quinton de Kock, who has yet to find form in this tournament, and they could have had another. South Africa’s scoring rate was higher than it had been previous matches but that did not equate to control. That only came later, when Amla and Faf du Plessis punished a bowling attack that lacked penetration and provided a glimpse into South Africa’s batting pattern. AB de Villiers calls it “batting our way” and he explained it is about being astute.”You can’t play positive cricket for 50 overs and go hard at everything you get. You gave to read the situation well,” de Villiers said. “We do it our way. We’re not trying to follow someone else’s strategies. We stick to our gameplans.”That is actually the way most teams would want to bat: grind upfront, lay a solid base and then allow the batsmen who remain to break free. But only teams who get the first two things right can move on to the third and they can only move on to it successfully if they know how to be flexible. “It’s about the flow of the game. We had a partnership going and we were settled in the partnerships,” Amla said. “There is no set formula on when you decide to go.”Usually for South Africa, when the base is laid and one of their set batsmen “goes”, so does the other and then the ones who follow as well. In that way the batsmen “feed off each other,” de Villiers said. “Everyone gets energy and confidence from watching each other bat.”At Manuka Oval against Ireland, the men who provided the food were Amla and du Plessis. What was different about the way they approached the innings this time was that they focused on power-hitting, something which has seldom been a prominent feature in a gameplan which has been moulded on subtlety and soft touches.Maybe that is what influenced Amla’s choice of his favourite shot. “There was the nick to third man for four which I quite enjoyed,” Amla said, tongue firmly in cheek. “It’s the least effort for the most reward.”

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq will take no further part in the one-day series against New Zealand, having picked up a hamstring injury during the second ODI on Friday. Shahid Afridi will lead the side in his absence.Misbah sustained the injury in the third over of New Zealand’s chase in Sharjah, and did not take the field for the rest of the game. The PCB is yet to decide whether Misbah will stay with the team or return to Pakistan. His injury comes at a crucial time for Pakistan, as the team tries to firm up its combination and build momentum ahead of the World Cup in February and March. The series against New Zealand is currently tied at 1-1, with three games to play. The third ODI will be played on Sunday, in Sharjah.Pakistan are also without fast bowler Umar Gul and allrounder Bilawal Bhatti for these matches. Gul, who had made his return to international cricket in this series after a long injury layoff, was left out of the second ODI due to a bruised tendon in his left ankle. Bhatti, meanwhile, is out with a hand injury.

Footitt best destroys Glamorgan

ScorecardMark Footitt took six wickets to set up a simple chase for Derbyshire•Getty Images

Mark Footitt made another persuasive case for higher honours with an explosive spell of fast bowling that blew away Glamorgan and put Derbyshire in sight of victory after two days.Footitt, the 28-year-old, showed why he is the country’s second leading wicket-taker with a devastating spell of 5 for 21 to sweep aside the top order on his way to a career-best 6 for 48.Glamorgan had no answer to his pace and hostility and although the last three wickets added 91, Derbyshire were left needing only 73 for victory and closed on 13 for 1 after the loss of Billy Godleman.Michael Hogan took 5 for 63 but a ninth-wicket stand of 73 between Tony Palladino and David Wainwright gave Derbyshire a lead of 103 to set the stage for Footitt’s decisive burst. The game had been in the balance at the start of play with Derbyshire four runs ahead with four wickets intact and Glamorgan must have fancied their chances of polishing the innings of quickly when Hogan struck twice in his first two overs. Gareth Cross went to the opening ball of the morning when he was bowled playing no shot and when Alex Hughes had his stumps shattered by the 16th ball of the session, Derbyshire were only nine runs in front. But Hogan and the rest of the Glamorgan attack could not sustain the consistent lines and lengths which had paid dividends for Derbyshire on the first day which allowed Wainwright and Palladino to forge the partnership which swung the momentum back to the home side.Palladino pulled a short ball from Hogan for six over midwicket and an unlikely batting point was secured before the seamer mistimed a drive at Dean Cosker and was caught at mid-off for 33.But Derbyshire were now 82 in front and there was more frustration to come for the visitors as Footitt flogged Cosker for three fours in five balls before Hogan took his fifth wicket when Wainwright edged into the gloves of Mark Wallace.Conditions were much easier for batting with blue skies overhead but Glamorgan knew they had to survive the new ball to have any chance of making a game of it but their chances were demolished by Footitt. Will Bragg mistimed a drive to mid-on in the third over and Murray Goodwin felt for just 1 to edge into the gloves of Cross but there was nothing Jacques Rudolph could do against a ball that took off from a good length and hit the top of the bat handle to give Footitt at simple return catch.Chris Cooke was beaten for pace and when Ben Wright was caught behind fending at another rapid, lifting delivery, Footitt had reduced Glamorgan’s innings to rubble at 42 for 5. All they could do now was to try to avoid the ignominy of an innings defeat and Wallace and Jim Allenby gave them hope by adding 41 before Allenby flashed a wide ball from Tom Taylor and was smartly taken at first slip by Wayne Madsen. When Wallace was undone by some late movement from Taylor, Glamorgan were still 19 behind but Cosker and James Harris at least made sure Derbyshire would have to bat again before Cosker was bowled charging Taylor.Footitt returned to claim Harris as his final victim for the day when the 24-year-old was caught behind, but some spirited strokes from Hogan and Will Owen held up Derbyshire until Wainwright beat Owen’s attempted cut.Although Godleman was lbw to Hogan for a duck, Derbyshire need only 60 more at stumps and Footitt said: “Everything clicked for me today and it came just when we needed it. I’m just concentrating on doing well for Derbyshire, that’s all I can do, keep performing and see what happens.”Glamorgan head coach Toby Radford added: “It’s been a disappointing day, Palladino and Wainwright put 70 odd runs on which gave them a lead of a hundred which on this pitch was always going to be significant. It’s been tough for two days and we haven’t been able to build a big enough lead.”

Misfiring teams search for turnaround

Kevin Pietersen’s expected return is an undoubted boost to Delhi Daredevils, but their depleted pace attack might be just as rejuvenating to the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s misfiring top order

‘On form, Delhi look better than Hyderabad’

Match factsFriday, April 25, 2014
Start time 1430 (1030 GMT, 1600 IST)All eyes on him: Kevin Pietersen is expected to make his debut as a T20 globetrotter•Getty Images

Match factsDelhi Daredevils will hope the prospective debut of Kevin Pietersen in his new role of globetrotting T20 expert would make half as much an impact as it secures eye balls. His England door remains as shut as ever, though he hasn’t let it weigh him down, assuming tweets of comparing notes with David Moyes and Piers Morgan about bad years are accurate measure. A fractured finger has delayed his return to competitive cricket – in which time Daredevils have sustained two limp defeats in three games – but with some training behind him and his team needing a definitive push from the bottom half of the table, the big occasion beckons.Daredevils wouldn’t have much strife fitting their captain into the XI with Nathan Coulter-Nile sidelined with a hamstring injury. As much as Pietersen’s availability is a boost, the loss of a potent death bowler might sting badly. With hardly any reserves in the squad, the onus falls on Mohammed Shami to control either end of the bowling innings and Pietersen himself in how well he distributes the workload.Facing a depleted attack in an afternoon match forms the best opportunity for Sunrisers Hyderabad to post first points. The top three, for all their repute, have been shoddy and the support acts lower down have found recovery out of their depth. There is an argument for spreading Shikhar Dhawan, Aaron Finch and David Warner along the batting order especially considering the Dubai track has played tricks with the batsmen’s timing. None of them are as potent outside the opening position, but an experienced hand to guide the latter half of the innings is vital considering wickets have usually tumbled in clumps here.Watch out for …Rapid starts are Mayank Agarwal’s forte. His penchant for hitting the ball on the up and through the line makes for exciting viewing, but if the opposition is smart and keeps a steady back of a length outside off, he tends to orchestrate his own downfall. He has been typecast as a new-ball specialist but Bhuvneshwar Kumar has displayed admirable tenacity in the final overs. He’s hit the yorkers, he’s sneaked in a few slower balls and stifled the batsmen for room and in the process has gone six an over or under so far.Stats and trivia Delhi Daredevils recorded their lowest total of 80 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 David Warner’s T20 strike-rate falls from 142.57 while opening to 121.22 for Nos. 3-7

Parnell unlikely to bowl in Port Elizabeth Test

Wayne Parnell is unlikely to bowl for the rest of the second Test after straining his groin

Firdose Moonda in Port Elizabeth22-Feb-2014Wayne Parnell is unlikely to bowl for the rest of the second Test after straining his groin. Parnell left the field on the third morning after delivering 8.3 overs and was immediately taken to hospital for scans. The scans showed no tear but the strain was significant enough to rule him out of action for the next five-seven days.Morne Morkel said although South Africa’s bowlers would have a greater workload in the second innings in Parnell’s absence, they would be willing to “put in any extra effort that’s needed.”Parnell was spotted walking around the field after the day’s play with a member of South Africa’s team management. He took his steps gingerly and made slow progress, a sign running will not come too easy for him.Although Parnell will probably not be able to bowl again in the Test, he will bat if needed. His status for the Newlands Test is still uncertain, given his troubled history with groin strains. In 2010, he had picked up a strain during the IPL, which forced him out of the tournament and kept him out of the game for months, while also stunting his progress at the international level. He yo-yoed in and out of South Africa’s limited-overs sides after debuting in 2009 but had to wait four years and three days for a Test recall. Parnell played three Tests for South Africa in 2010 and was left out of the side until this Test, in which he replaced Ryan McLaren, who was suffering from concussion.Parnell’s progression was on show from the first ball he bowled in the Test, when he dismissed Alex Doolan. Parnell had another wicket in that over and bowled consistently at speeds in the upper 140kph.

Trent Bridge silence Cooper's trumpet

The build-up to the start of the Ashes, already reaching a fevered pitch, now has its cause celebre, after several current and former England players took to Twitter to express their disgruntlement at the decision by Nottinghamshire not to let the Barmy Army trumpeter, Billy Cooper, play his instrument at Trent Bridge. The first Investec Test will begin on Wednesday but the strains of Cooper’s trumpet – playing “Jerusalem”, or the Countdown theme music during a review – will be absent. Cooper revealed on Friday that he had been refused permission to play, tweeting: “Just to clarify that Trent Bridge have said I can’t play at the 1st test. Very disappointed. ECB were supportive but it’s up to the ground.”Kevin Pietersen called it an “absolute DISGRACE” on Twitter, while former England captain Michael Vaughan encouraged his followers to tweet the hashtag #LetBillyBlowhisTrumpet in an attempt to get the decision overturned. Matt Prior and Charlotte Edwards, the England women’s captain, also voiced their support for Cooper, while the majority of fans were voting in his favour on ESPNcricinfo’s poll.Cooper, a professional musician, has become a fixture with the Barmy Army group of supporters who follow England home and away, with his well-judged interludes becoming popular with spectators. On England’s last Ashes tour of Australia, he was an audible presence at all five of the Tests and the decision to ban him four years earlier sparked similar controversy. However, a Nottinghamshire spokesman said on Saturday that there were no plans to change the county’s policy, which was in force in 2005 when England just held their nerve to beat Australia in the dramatic fourth Test. “It is not personal against him or his trumpet,” he said. “It is just a long-standing policy position. There is no chance of a change of mind.”
